Platelet-rich plasma therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that harnesses and amplifies the natural growth factors found in our blood cells to help heal damaged tissue.
WHAT IS PRP REJOINT?
PRP is a modern therapeutic method that stimulates the healing process and helps to improve cartilage or tendon damage with a complex of autologous platelet-derived growth factors. It activates a “supraphysiological” natural healing cascade and tissue regeneration directly at the site of treatment. In a small trial of 160 people, a 2015 study found that PRP injections were more effective than hyaluronic acid, a traditional therapy for treating osteoarthritis, in improving patients’ function and quality of life.
A small sample of your blood is collected, similar to when you have a blood test done. It is then centrifuged, which is a process that separates the blood into red cells and plasma. The plasma is extracted and light-activated and injected into the injured or degenerated joints, tendons or bursas.
BENEFITS OF PRP REJOINT
PRP can be used to treat many orthopaedic conditions such as osteoarthritis, bursitis, muscle strain, tendonitis, tendinosis and repetitive strain injuries such as tennis elbow. Traditional treatments for these conditions include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) or injectable or oral steroids that are often associated with a lot of systemic side-effects. It’s important to note that PRP has an extremely low risk for any side-effects as it is made from your own blood.
